Day 29 - Say Anything

First Impressions:

I find as I get to the top of the list, I have less to say, so I'll just "Say Anything".  See?  See how bad that is?

"Say Anything" is an iconic movie from 1989 with a grand gesture scene has been parodied to death and yet is still as powerful as ever.  Personally I would be very moved to be serenaded by a boom box playing Peter Gabriel in the year 2017.  To even track down a working boom box shows the perfect combination of committed and cute.

Personal Reflections:

"She's gone. She gave me a pen. I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen."

Lloyd Dobler.  He's not a guy, he's a man.  The women in his life ensure that is the case.  He is proof that perfect boyfriend material does not require a high-paying job as a lawyer or more likely plans to pursue some fashion of print media.  Lloyd Dobler is just a decent guy who, like Andie, is going to live his truth and follow his moral compass where ever it takes him.  He's a true romantic.

I always feel bad for Diane Court's dad when his credit cards get denied as he tries to pick up the cashier.  I want to believe he is doing the right thing in securing the money for Diane's future, but there are other ways that do not involve stealing from the elderly.  They didn't really need that jukebox.  I felt more charged that Jim Court convinced Diane to dump Lloyd.  Did Lloyd's sincerity and earnestness trigger some moral guilt?

What I take away from this viewing of "Say Anything" is a checklist as to how you know someone is 'the one'.  It's quiz time!

1. When you go out, do you even need to go out - Could you just drive around and that would be fun?

2. What you really want to do with your life is be with this person.  That's what you want to do for a living.

3. Do you want to be with that person (or just someone)?

4. Does this person invade your soul?

5. Would you stand outside this person's bedroom window with a boom box playing "In Your Eyes"?

6. Do you not draw the line at 7 unreturned phone calls?

7.  Does this person make you trust yourself?  Do you walk around feeling satisfied because they are a part of your life?

8.  Would you fly with this person on an international flight because this person has a fear of flying?

If you answered 'Yes' to:
  • 6 to 8 questions -> You are Lloyd and Diane.  Congratulations!
  • 3 to 5 questions -> Not bad.  You might not be hanging out at the Gas'n'Sip on a Saturday night drinking beers for much longer.
  • 1 to 2 questions -> Get out your guitar and start writing songs about Joe.

Rom-Com Tropes:

1. "The rain on my car is a baptism."  Rain scene.  From the cleanse of the rain emerges 'Ice Man', 'Power Lloyd'.
2. Opposites attract.  He's a slacker, she's a brain.
3. Grand gesture

Soundtrack:

"In Your Eyes" is the stand out track.  It's what "If You Leave" was to "Pretty in Pink".  The '80s were a golden age for rom-com grand gestures.  I can't think of many millennium rom-coms that have a grand gesture so tightly coupled to a song that just hearing the song invokes mention of the scene.  "Crazy, Stupid, Love" steals its grand gesture - most people would recall "Time Of My Life" in the context of the original 1987 classic "Dirty Dancing".
